Ghosts of Killisnoo In 1942 Anne Pettikoff was 15 years old. She and her village of 42 Aleuts watched two Japanese Zeros bomb their quaint little town on Atka Island. The Imperial Army of Japan landed and took possession of two islands east of them. This chain of islands is part of Alaska. This was the first time in history an enemy had possession of American soil. A navy ship was sent to take the Aleuts out of harm's way. The ship's captain gave them an hour to pack and only allowed them to take one suitcase per person. They then herded them up like cattle and put them onboard his ship. As it sailed away, the Aleuts from Atka watched the army set fire to their village to discourage the Japanese from occupying it. 900 Aleuts from this chain of islands were shipped 1300 miles east and put into six different internment camps. This was similar to what was done to the Japanese-Americans six months earlier, but not as pleasant. The Aleuts from Atka were unloaded and interned at the abandoned cannery on the small island of Killisnoo, about sixty miles south of Juneau, Alaska. Anne and her family are fictional characters. But what they had to do to survive on Killisnoo Island for three years is a true story. The average Aleut death rate doubled during their time interned at these camps. While digging for clams with a stick, Anne met and befriended a Tlingit boy, and because of this boy, she and her family fared better than most.
